Common Questions

  • I primarily edit memoir, travel literature, and nonfiction for a general audience, as well as academic writing, usually in the humanities. I have experience with a variety of style guides, including Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS), AP, MLA, and APA, and apply the style requested by the author.

  • Not at all. I edit in Canadian, U.S., or U.K. English, depending on what the author requests. I ensure consistency with the chosen variant throughout the manuscript.

  • No — I do not use AI as a writing tool. I may occasionally use it as a research aid, for example, to check synonyms or verify a historical date. All editorial decisions, suggestions, and revisions come from my expertise and judgment.

  • It’s best to reach out once you have a solid draft and are beginning to think about the next stage of revision. Many writers contact me several months before they hope to have their manuscript edited, as editing schedules often fill in advance.

  • Editing is a careful, time-intensive process. For a manuscript around 200 pages, a complete edit usually requires up to a month, depending on complexity. This allows time for a thorough, thoughtful edit with careful attention to structure, clarity, and flow. If you contact me in May and my next available slot is at the beginning of October, your manuscript would likely be returned by the beginning of November. Occasionally, expedited services may be available upon request.

  • Editing suggestions are always just that—suggestions. You remain the final decision-maker for your manuscript. My role is to provide thoughtful feedback and professional guidance while respecting your authority as the author.

  • Yes. I take on a limited number of manuscripts at a time so that each project receives careful attention. If my schedule is full, I’m always happy to discuss future availability.

  • We can connect via Zoom or phone call for initial discussions or detailed questions. For ongoing updates, feedback, and questions, we will primarily communicate via email, which allows clear documentation of edits and conversations.
